— A 17-year-old girl who disappeared on a spring break trip has been confirmed dead, and a suspect is in custody, said South Carolina authorities.The remains of Brittanee Drexel were found last week, more than 13 years after she went missing in Myrtle Beach. The high school junior from Rochester, N.Y., had defied her mother to travel to the popular spring break destination.
The last sighting of her was in a surveillance video from April 25, 2009, as she left her hotel, apparently to meet friends. Investigators say they believed she was killed the day she went missing. On Wednesday, her buried remains were found in Georgetown County. Raymond Douglas Moody, 62, of Georgetown, is charged with murder, obstructing justice, kidnapping and criminal sexual conduct in the first degree, his arrest warrants show.
Moody had first been named as a person of interest in 2011. He had served more than 20 years in jail for kidnapping and sexual assault of girls and had been in the Georgetown area since his release in 2004. Brittanee’s grave was 2½ miles from where he was living in 2009.
