Catching up with ‘Mini Bautista’: How José Bautista’s biggest fan is spreading his Blue Jays love overseas
When legendary Blue Jays outfielder José Bautista is honoured on the Level of Excellence at Rogers Centre on Saturday, many of his former teammates will have travelled from afar to witness it. But a popular figure from the Bautista era and one of his biggest fans will be missing at the ballpark.
Oscar Wood became an internet sensation known as “Mini Bautista” back in 2015 when a viral video showed him dressed as Bautista, sporting a fake beard and performing imaginary but well-timed swings at the stadium. All these years later, he’ll be on a different continent in a different timezone when his favourite athlete is honoured this weekend, but Wood and his family, who now live in the U.K.
