A petition signed by more than 3 million people asking for $2,000 a month — and $1,000 more for each child a person might have — in government assistance until the pandemic’s end seems to have lost some momentum across the past week. Seven days ago, the petition has just more than 3 million signatures. And, early Saturday morning, it still sat at just more than 3 million signatures. But, with a goal of 4.

The federal government issued three rounds of stimulus payments dating back to the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. All of those payments were one-check affairs, and while some lawmakers have talked about monthly payments, no such plan has come close to fruition.
