Protesters and counter-protesters yelled and chanted at each other from across Wellington Street in Ottawa Wednesday as a large demonstration opposed to teaching LGBTQ2S+ issues in schools took over Parliament Hill.
The"One Million March for Children" was held Wednesday, met by pro-LGBTQ2S+ counter-protesters. Ottawa police kept the two sides separated along Wellington Street. While both sides yelled and chanted slogans at each other, the demonstrations were peaceful.
As Mayor of Ottawa, I condemn any form of discrimination or hatred. Members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community have the right to live free from harassment and bigotry. "The Ottawa Police Service is aware of reports of planned demonstrations, and we are working with our municipal and policing partners on integrated operational plans," a police spokesperson said in a statement to CTV News Ottawa.
The march comes on the heels of months of cultural battles in the U.S. and Canada over LGBTQ2S+ rights, particularly involving transgender people and gender-affirming care for minors.
