, died Saturday at age 83 from complications stemming from long-haul Covid-19, his family said.

Shannon debuted on the Cardinals Radio Network in 1972 alongside Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Buck. Together, they called nearly three decades worth of games on 1120 KMOX. Shannon became the lead voice upon Buck’s 2002 death, then retired after the 2021 season. Beyond radio, Shannon made appearances as a pre-game analyst for Fox Sports Midwest. He also worked with NBC’s Baseball Game of the Week and called St. Louis Cardinals NFL football games on radio.

He was 83. The Cardinals said he died Saturday night in St. Louis. The team did not cite the cause of death. Shannon spent 50 years in the broadcast booth. That followed a short stint in the front office and a nine-year playing career with his hometown team. Shannon was the regular right fielder for the 1964 championship team. He moved to third base in 1967 when St. Louis acquired Roger Maris and also won the World Series. Shannon retired after the 2021 season.
