Photographer Mike Drew heads toward Sundre as a smoky, misty haze hangs in the air, casting everything in a lovely orange hue.

How it missed my side mirror I don’t know, but for a couple seconds, it was running at a full gallop just inches from my front fender. Realizing it might swerve in front of me, I hit the brakes to let it get ahead and, sure enough, it did just that.Quickly, I grabbed the camera and shot a couple of pictures through the front window and then pulled over to get a better shot.

I headed up through Cremona and turned onto Big Prairie Road to go west. Flocks of blackbirds flew over the fields and black spruce trees stood twisted and skeletal in the boggy valleys. Up on the flats, balers stood idle behind tractors waiting for drier conditions to get back to work while sheep grazed on the grass among the aspens.Article content

Though it was now getting close to noon, the light continued to be soft and sweet. I found a single, very tall, aspen that stood straight as a flagpole on the edge of a lumber cut and paused to look upstream along the Red Deer River as the clouds parted just long enough for a bit of sun to shine through.Article content

Last week, it was logging trucks. This week, it was livestock trailers. A steady stream of them was flowing in both directions. What they were hauling and why, I don’t know. But thanks to the drizzle, at least they weren’t kicking up clouds of dust.Article content Still no luck. True, it was mid-day and the single road that runs through their range was uncharacteristically busy so they may have been relaxing out of sight or just moved off to less noisy pastures but it was still strange to not see any at all. I went upstream nearly all the way to Ya Ha Tinda Ranch but, nothing. And it was starting to get a bit stormy. The drizzle had stopped but the dark clouds I’d seen earlier were now starting to churn.
