Mike Drew: Snowy owls home on the prairie, where deer and antelope usually play yyc
Man, there is a lot of snow out this way. It’s piled so high at the sides of the roads that in places all you can see are the walls of snow with a swath of blue sky above. Out in the more open areas, the snow was deep and even but everywhere I looked, the world was coloured by a palette made up entirely of white and shades of blue.A snowy owl takes in the view near Hussar, Ab., on Wednesday, March 8, 2023.
There were the usual magpies around a pasture where cattle were munching on fresh feed while mixed flocks of snow buntings and horned larks flitted among them. A couple of the larks got in a scrap and I immediately wondered if it might be a territorial thing. Though it neither feels nor looks like it, we are approaching the middle of March. Nesting season isn’t all that far away.Article contentI kept going east toward antelope country, scanning the snowy plains for birds and animals as I went.
The horizon to the east looked a bit ominous and I nearly turned back but I’ve seen so many antelope along the road to Wardlow, I decided to keep on going.
