Mike Drew: From flitting butterflies to flickering stars, magic is in the air yyc
It was verging on being too much of a good thing with the monkey flowers, though. Their deep pink colour was already intense enough and the softer green of their leaves took on a kind of mustardy look. But they still looked lovely. Now if the wind would back off a touch, I could get in close enough to show off their detail. So I sat there on the sharp rocks, waiting, and as I did, a pair of butterflies flew in.
And then, nearer to the head of the valley, I pulled over at one of the few islands of trees that the fire missed. This patch of forest sits in the lee of a tall ridge and likely survived when the wind blew the flames over it instead of through it. The damp spring in the shadows of the lee might have helped, too.Article contentThere, I found bog orchids and thick moss, tiny sedges and low buttercups. And a plant called self-heal.
I drove on down and hit the grassy valley floor along the Carbondale River and at the junction where it meets Lynx Creek, I turned west. And was into the smoke again. And by the time I got to its head, the sun had set and the blue light of dusk had settled in. Dead trees from that same fire as the valley back to the east stood stark and grey. But birdsong filled the air. Robins and white-throated sparrows were singing their evening songs and they were complemented by the tinkle of unseen springs and the soft roar of Lynx Creek coming from the valley floor below.

With no moon to add additional light, that was a challenge, but I found a few things. And that orange glow the smoke gave to the sky actually looked OK once I got used to it.
Cattle in the Lynx Creek valley briefly lit by headlights south of Blairmore, Ab., on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.By 3 a.m., though, I’d had enough. So, finding a place to park back along the Carbondale River, I reclined the seat and closed my eyes.
