Calgary Flames centre Mikael Backlund left the 2023 NHL Awards gala in Nashville with the King Clancy Memorial Trophy.

“I’m very honoured and humbled to receive this award,” said Backlund, who will score a $25,000 donation to direct to the charity of his choice. “We as professional athletes live a privileged life, and we have a great opportunity. A little gesture from us can be a big thing in someone else’s world.”

His charitable impact would certainly be missed, too. Now among the longest-tenured skaters in franchise history, his fundraising efforts and volunteer work are just as important as his 185 goals, 492 points or 6,440 faceoff wins in his 908 career appearances in Calgary’s crest.Article content On what he described as an “emotional” and “special” evening, Backlund was later asked about speculation that his stint at the Saddledome could be coming to an end. His current contract expires at the end of the 2023-24 campaign and general manager Craig Conroy has indicated that he will field trade offers for guys who aren’t intending to stick around.

Backlund is just the fourth Flames player to be saluted as winner of the King Clancy Trophy, joining Jarome Iginla , Joe Nieuwendyk and Lanny McDonald on what is a legendary list.
