It has stopped raining — for now. Here's what you need to know about the flooding in Michigan:
following days of storms and the failure of two dams forced the evacuation of thousands, who are staying with friends, family and at local shelters.
The National Weather Service said communities farther downstream were bracing for flooding in the coming days. No injuries or fatalities related to the flooding have been reported, Midland spokeswoman Selina Tisdale said.that a flood warning remained in effect Wednesday night along the entire Tittabawassee River in Midland County. The Tittabawassee River hit a historic high Wednesday morning, rising above its previous record in 1986, and reaching 34.6 feet. Major flood stage is 28 feet.
"The fact of the matter is," she said,"we have underinvested over a period of decades in this state," adding that"we all pay when infrastructure fails, that's why we've all got to be a part of making sure that doesn't happen." The governor asked for help removing debris and erecting mobile bridges for emergency response vehicles to access in flooded areas and for equipment to aid residents, emergency medical personnel from the National Guard, and technical assistance and sandbags from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The residents stood on the shore and looked out at a giant barren moonscape, where there was once a lake. The American Red Cross has set up eight shelters in the Midland area. Individuals are being screened for symptoms prior to entering the shelters, and masks and face coverings are being provided.
