Michelle Yeoh called for more AAPI representation after receiving the SeeHer award at the inaugural Gold Gala: “All women’s stories need to be told and need to be seen.”
To celebrate Asian Heritage Month, Gold House—the leading Asian and Pacific Islander changemaker community that unites, invests in, and promotes API creative and companies—honored“I’m not going to lie, I waited a long time for this, and I am so lucky for this opportunity,” Yeoh toldEverything Everywhere All at Once,Tomorrow Never Dies.
“So many Asian actresses and actors wait their whole life for this to happen in their career and the opportunity might never come, so they moved onto other things because they were not given opportunities. I was resilient and I fought hard. I never stopped learning. I was ready when the opportunity did present itself.”
Yeoh’s role as Evelyn Wang, an overworked, Chinese American laundromat operator who becomes a universe-hopping hero, is her first leading role in an American film—and one she calls the “most fulfilling” of her long career. “I am being seen and my voice is being heard with this movie,” said Yeoh. “As a woman in my 50s, I work to ensure that the women I play are not just relegated to auntie stereotypes, or the traditional grandmothers.
“I was not forgotten, but I was not given the opportunity to really do what I can still do because of my age,” Yeoh, who will turn 60 in August, continued. “Why is it that many older women can’t be in action films? Why can’t women, especially Asian women of a certain age, be more than just an immigrant character? All women’s stories need to be told and need to be seen.
