Meta is already too powerful. One company controls what much of the public is allowed to see. Meta’s business model is about getting the public to spend more time online so Meta can profile us more and make advertising money. For that reason, Threads has next to zero privacy protections, allowing companies to know one’s location and consumer preferences.Article contentwhen it created Section 230, as part of the Communications Decency Act in 1996, was to maximize free speech, not maximize corporate profits.
The implications are that Congress must mandate transparency by Big Tech social media platforms when it comes to making censorship and content moderation decisions. Or, if Meta and other social media companies don’t want to be transparent, they don’t have to be. But then they should no longer receive the Section 230 exemption by Congress.Article content
