ICYMI - Michael Higgins: David Johnston needs to go; he's lost our trust

Liberals would do well to heed Stanton’s call

“Espionage has become rather passé,” he said. “Why risk stealing state secrets when you can influence and manipulate the targeted countries’ policy-makers you can get close to, what we consider, the soft underbelly through democratic institutions.” Interestingly, he seemed to want to take it out of the realm of partisanship by calling on the prime minister to make the decision.

Investigations into foreign influence were “not that sensitive,” said Stanton. “There is not going to be that much coming out that is going to shake western civilization,” he added.“Democracy is a matter of confidence,” said Wilczynski. “There is a consensus that there has to be this independent investigation. It’s important to have it because it is a means to build that trust. Without trust there is no democracy.

But Johnston doesn’t appear to have that much trust in our political institutions considering he recently turned down a summons to appear before MPs and discuss his role in the Trudeau Foundation.
