MGM Television is planting a flag in the UK as it looks to ramp up production of non-scripted projects and has hired former Channel 4 exec Dom Bird to oversee the expansion. Bird, who was responsib…

This comes after MGM launched a new formats division earlier this year with Scot Cru. London-based Bird will jointly report to Cru, who is Executive Vice President of Global Formats & Unscripted Content and Barry Poznick, MGM’s President of Unscripted & Alternative Television and Orion Television.

Bird, a long-time associate of Mark Burnett, MGM’s Chairman of their Worldwide Television Group, was Head of Formats at Channel 4 before leaving last year. He was at C4 for six years, having joined from the BBC, where he was Creative Director at the company’s entertainment production division, overseeing shows such as “I’ve known Dom for more than 15-years, he has a keen understanding of how to build great shows that relate to audiences worldwide.

“Mark Burnett and the team at MGM really are the very best in the business and I’m thrilled to be joining their efforts to expand the reach of this iconic company,” added Bird.

Ornithologists Awarded $10 Million Grant To Research Whether That Big Bird Up There A HawkOrnithologists Awarded $10 Million Grant To Research Whether That Big Bird Up There A HawkSOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI—Hoping the financial incentive will help classify that thing circling around in the sky, ornithologists at the University of Rhode Island were awarded a $10 million grant this week to research whether that big bird way up there is a hawk. “It was pretty far away when we first saw it, but it looked huge,” said Dr. Elizabeth Starcher, assistant director of the Avian Ecology Program, stating that the significant sum would be used to help the symposium of top ornithologists ascertain whether the bird is a hawk, an eagle, or possibly even a falcon. “A preliminary inquiry, which utilized a simple combination of squinting and shielding our eyes from the sun, determined that there is a 60% to 70% chance it’s a hawk, all right. We plan to expand our investigation by passing around the binoculars, maybe snap some pictures and hope they’re not too grainy. You got to admit it would be pretty cool if it were an actual hawk.” At press time, the researchers have been unable to conclude whether the bird up there was a hawk, as they could not be sure it was the same bird they had spotted earlier.
