Donald Trump has suggested renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the 'Gulf of America'. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded by proposing the renaming of North America to 'Mexican America', pointing to a 1607 map that depicts the region under that name. Sheinbaum , flanked by historical maps and former culture minister Jose Alfonso Suarez del Real, highlighted that 'Mexican America' has been recognized since the 17th century as the name for the northern part of the continent.
Suarez del Real also emphasized the long-standing international use of 'Gulf of Mexico' for maritime navigation. Trump's proposal, made during a press conference outlining his expansionist agenda, included ideas such as controlling the Panama Canal and Greenland. Sheinbaum countered Trump's claim that Mexico is 'run by the cartels', asserting that 'the people are in charge' and Mexico is actively addressing security concerns. Despite the exchange, Sheinbaum expressed optimism about a positive relationship between the two countries
