New York Mets outfielder doesn’t care where the team finishes this season — as long they are contenders in the future.

Nimmo signed an eight-year contract in December under the impression that the club was trying to contend. He admittedly had some reservations about the direction of the team after Max Scherzer was tradedbut he trusts the vision of owner Steve Cohen and he sees the talent in the clubhouse at all levels.

Nimmo and other veterans are helping players like Brett Baty, Francisco Alvarez, Ronny Mauricio and Mark Vientos, all of whom could play a major part in the Mets’ future. This season has not gone as planned with the Mets 64-75 and in fourth place in the NL East. “I could care less whether we finish last or second-to-last in the division,” Nimmo said. “I really don’t care. I’m looking at how we can make this team as good as possible for next year.”

In Tuesday’s win against the Nationals, Nimmo hit two home runs, with solo shots in both the fourth and ninth innings, bringing his season total to 22.
