The National Weather Service says a meteor is the likely cause of explosion in the sky on New Year's Day in southwest Pennsylvania.
The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, Pa., recorded a flash on New Year's Day that it says likely was caused by a meteor explosion. PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania — A loud explosion that rattled much of southwest Pennsylvania and parts of eastern Ohio on New Year’s Day likely was caused by a meteor, according to the National Weather Service.saying equipment recorded a flash at about 11:26 a.m. Saturday that was not caused by lightning at the time the explosion was reported.
