Argentina look absolutely primed for a Croatia-ing.

Date published: Tuesday 13th December 2022 8:17 -It’s Messi v Modric in the World Cup semi-final and however much you think Croatia can’t possibly do it again we must consider that a) they do keep doing it again and b) Argentina have spent the whole tournament with the precise look of a side Croatia do it against. It’s understandable and often entirely correct. The result is ultimately quite an important thing in a game of football, based as it is upon The Only Statistic That Matters.

In the case of Croatia, their outrageous smash-and-grab penalty shootout win over Brazil in the last eight was further evidence of their warrior-like point-blank refusal to be beaten after equalising in the 117th minute of the game when their first shot on target spun beyond a helpless Alisson via a huge deflection. It may well be that this was and is Croatia’s only way of beating Brazil, but we shouldn’t pretend it was a high-percentage option.

Either after Croatia do what Croatia inevitably do or France do what France inevitably do. Or just possibly Argentina win the whole damn thing.before a ball was kicked, but are strangely far less confident about it now they are in a semi-final. It’s not just that jarring opening defeat to Saudi Arabia, although it is partly that. They just haven’t been that good, have they?
