A Merrillville man who hated his former daughter-in-law and allegedly didn’t want her and his son to get back together was sentenced to 65 years Thursday for her murder.
Frank Zyzanski, now 62, was convicted of murder on Aug. 24 for shooting Crystal Marie Zyzanski, 29, in the neck at her ex-husband’s Merrillville home on April 4, 2020, court records show.Rachel Landeros, Crystal’s mom, said Thursday the pain was just as fresh 3.5 years later. Crystal’s birthday was coming up and she would take flowers to her grave, instead of making a cake.
Their three kids — then ranging in age from 9 to 2 — were present when the shooting happened, according to court documents. The oldest girl, then 9, may have witnessed it, lawyers said. Deputy Prosecutor Shannon Phillips asked for a maximum 65-year sentence. Frank Zyzanski had a criminal record going back 50 years, she said.
After the hearing, Landeros said her daughter loved “everybody,” her kids and her job as a grocery store manager.
