The upcoming model, with a $200,000 price tag, has a 280 mile range, ambient lighting, air purification, and can reach 130 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds.

A decade or so ago, a new Maybach would arrive for duty as a sophisticated, ultra-luxury vehicle built with creature comforts to rival any Rolls-Royce and powered by a massive, gas-gurgling V12 bi-turbo engine. Today’s version of that iconic brand still packs all of the elite appointments with its power plant going all electric.

Beyond its ecological credentials, the EQS 680 lavishes the driver and passengers with all the necessary technological bells and whistles—all while keeping the creature comforts coming. The price tag starts north of US$200,000 and includes vegetable-tanned leather and hand-carved natural wood. Air purifiers cleanse the air while massaging chairs and calf rests soothe the muscles.

Crossovers and smaller SUVs continue to dominate the automotive sales realm, with the top sellers for many automakers coming from those vehicle classes. Such popularity seems to play to the well-heeled crowd well enough for Mercedes-Maybach to go with the EQS SUV for its next vehicle. Lescow explains that an SUV architecture offers maximum spaciousness, allowing his designers to integrate “Maybach-specific” comfort and luxury features.

Meanwhile, the door opens automatically when the driver approaches to within about 5 feet. With the batteries and drive system bumping the SUV’s weight up to 6,700 pounds, a new rear-wheel steering system helps the car maneuver at lower speeds. With the manufacturers of the ultimate and mid-range luxury automobiles all moving toward full electrification during the coming decade, Lescow says it’s full speed ahead for Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-Maybach to continue toward comprehensive electrification across both product lines.
