Commission on Nova Scotia shooting recommended dramatic overhaul of the leadership of Mounties and how they train new recruits.
The commissioners in their initial report found the Depot training academy was rooted in a paramilitary culture and significantly disconnected from modern policing.
Commissioners wrote in their final report that it was long past time for fundamental overhaul of the force. “The report sets out a critical path forward to reform the RCMP reforms that are long overdue and reforms that — I want to be clear — that I, in my capacity as the Minister of Public Safety, am committed to seeing through,” he said. “The RCMP is at a crossroads. And what is important is that to mend trust, we have to implement these recommendations.”Article content
The fact is that we do have to take a hard look at how it is that new members of the RCMP are being trained.He said on the training issue he knows there are real flaws, but didn’t commit to closing Depot.
