A Black man will portray a white Civil War general in a tour of Newark's historic Mt. Pleasant Cemetery on Monday
, a Newark businessman elected to his one term in 1902, 40 years after he enlisted in the Union Army at age 16.
“Since the general I’m playing was not a Black man, in the beginning, I will say that he wasn’t a Black man because I don’t want that taking away from the information that I’m giving,” Walls said of his presentation on Hillyer. “It would definitely have been a hard path if it had been, let’s say, a Southern , you know, for the Confederacy.”
“Black people, even for Gen. Hillyer, might not have been in the same station, let’s say. I mean, I don’t, a historian and director of the African-American History Program of the New Jersey Historical Commission, said she could not immediately comment on Hillyer.Michael Perrone, a stone mason and president of the Belleville Historical Society, has restored countless veterans’ headstones over the years, including Heller’s.
