Two women and one community group were honored for their work with East Montgomery County’s Spanish-speaking population during the COVID-19 pandemic.
the Deerwood Community Center volunteers the 2023 Izcalia Reviving Community Award.
The event was a resource fair for the community to explore topics such as health, mental health, legal services, immigration services, education, culture and citizenship programs.as a response to the challenges of Latino families in the region. For two years they have been hosting a food line where they distribute food to those in need. They have also set up COVID-19 vaccination events, public health workshops and neighborhood gatherings at the community center.
She too came to the food line as a volunteer two years ago. She is also an officer for Latina Inspira Student Network a bicultural young women’s club at Lone Star College-Kingwood.She said as the support organizations come out of crisis mode, they are trying to best address the needs of the county’s Spanish-speaking community.
