Her images are a celebration of all the ways we can now make our own family—irrespective of gender and sexual orientation and including surrogacy, co-parenting, and the blending of relationships old and new into one loving household.
Today, two-year-old Milo is shy but thriving as Cosmao plays the disciplinarian, Durieux the peacemaker, and Borkett the entertainer . The dynamic will change again when the parents move into separate homes later this year, though they plan to live a few streets from each other. Milo will spend one week with his father; one with his mother, and they’ll holiday together at least one week a year. It works.
The biggest surprise is how often Massenet’s ex-husband and his second wife, stylist turned designer Caroline Sciamma Massenet , are part of their group. The families gravitated toward each other during lockdown, and have kept up the closeness—one brilliant night last summer, in a villa by the sea in Ibiza, they all danced happily under the stars—and there have been countless other nights since.
Both she and Joseph are currently single, which they know might not always be the case, but Seinen says they’re “in no hurry to bring any swift changes to our current dynamic.” The three-person family gathers together over as many meals as possible, making a particular point to practice gratitude. “What’s really amazing about Paul,” says Gordon, “is that for his whole life he has wanted to be a dad. That’s something I’ve always admired about him so much.”
