With this fascination, it was no surprise Hurlburt gravitated towards becoming a blacksmith. It was also in his blood. Hurlburt’s great-great grandfather, Frank Normandy, was a very well-known blacksmith in the early 1900s in the small village of Carleton, Yarmouth County, where he was born and raised. His grandfather also did a bit of smithing and his father had a small coal forge that Hurlburt now has but he never did much other than repairing a few things around the farm.
“One of my most cherished items in my shop is my 200 lb Peter Wright anvil that was a gift from my brother-in-law,” says Hurlburt, noting it’s more than 100 years old and in nearly mint condition. Another challenge, he says, is no matter what project you start in this trade, there comes a point when you’re almost finished and one little mistake can ruin a whole project.
