This week we highlight designer Olivia Cheng, who makes artistic, one-of-a-kind pieces for her brand,“I'm really fascinated by the same things I enjoyed when I was three or four years old,” says designer, who is now 21. “Growing up, I liked to paint and draw. Every day after preschool, I drew princesses, ladies in dresses, trees, and flowers.
At about the same time, Cheng started her own vintage resale business. She scoured vintage and secondhand stores near her parents’ home in the suburbs of Chicago, then curated and sold pieces through a resale app. She went on to sell boxes of vintage clothes, almost like a subscription service: Customers would pay her a certain amount of money, tell her their size and preferences, and Cheng would send them a box of items. “I did that for nine months and sold a few hundred,” she says.
Cheng came up with the idea for her brand on her 18th birthday, and used some of the money from her prior businesses to book a trip to Paris for the special occasion. “I was in Paris, by myself, vintage shopping, and I was in this really small store and they had all of these wonderful vintage fur coats and leathers, probably from some older woman’s fantastic collection from maybe 60 years ago,” she recalls.
For a full year she developed the idea for her business, and spent time painting the leather and interpreting different iconic moments in art history. For example, she re-created versions of
