San Antonio's tallest structure got its name 57 years ago this week, courtesy of contest winner Rosa M. Gonzalez.

Lucky for San Antonio and a punctual Corpus Christi woman, the Tower of the Americas name was chosen out of 3,354 entries submitted during a naming contest. The contest judges — which included Harry Jersig, then the president of the Lone Star Brewing Co. — chose the name 57 years ago on May 9, 1966. Tower of the Americas reportedly fit with the “The Confluence of Civilizations in the Americas” much more than Hi Ya Tower ever did.

You can thank Rosa M. Gonzalez for the name. Although 68 people recommended the winning name, Gonzalez was named the winner because she had the earliest post mark. She and her family also had their travel expenses paid for, a $100 U.S. savings bond, and a season pass to Hemisfair.
