Meet Rose Zhang, the golfer who just turned pro and is beating the world\u0027s best
Despite playing in her first event as a pro, Zhang is no stranger to high pressure situations on the golf course. The Arcadia, California native is the NCAA’s only two-time women’s individual champion, winning the 2022 and 2023 titles as a student-athlete at Stanford University. She also won the 2023 Augusta National Women’s Amateur tournament, as well as the 2020 U.S. Women’s Amateur. The win at the U.S. Women’s Am elevated Zhang to the world’s No.
Zhang began playing golf at nine years old and played in eight major championships as an amateur, making six cuts and finishing T11 at the 2020 Chevron Championship. “I feel like I’ve been in very high-caliber events,” she said. “Played in USGA events, major championships as an amateur, so there has been a lot of media slowly elevating throughout the years, but I have just been trying to take it in my own stride. I found out that at the end of the day I’m still playing my own golf ball and it’s important to take care of that first.”
Last spring, Zhang signed an NIL deal with Callaway while at Stanford. She has played Callaway equipment since she was 13. Now that she has turned pro, Zhang will see how her game stacks up against the world’s best players. “I still think I’m human so I do feel little small butterflies here and there,” she said. “I’ve been pretty comfortable when I’ve been on the golf course. I’ve been able to tap into my zone and I’ve just been trying to think about how this is the sport that I’ve been playing for the last ten or so years. I’m just doing what I need to do and going back to what my body knows.”
