Biggest surprise of today’s talkback was how many callers were keen on Kiri Allan as next labour leader. I knew she’d made an impression amongst the pundits, but hadn’t realised how much cut through she had with the public. , as he pointed to the “toxic masculinity” that Ms Ardern had experienced over the past couple of years. “There was a silencing effect and I think that it will be really difficult for a woman in the Labour Party to put her hand up now and say, ‘Okay, I’ll take this on’,” Professor Shaw toldWellington-based political analyst Bryce Edwards said Ms Allan would be a “bold choice” for Labour, but cautioned whether it was the right time for such a move.
“Her ability to inspire enthusiasm for a generational change in leadership would be great, but possibly just too risky for a caucus that is probably more focused now on ‘winning votes than wokes’,”Mr Edwards added that he believes “there will be many in the party telling Allan that it’s ‘not her time’, and to wait”.
On Thursday, deputy Labour leader Kelvin Davis ruled himself out of the leadership contest, but said it was “obvious” that he and Labour supporters within the Maori community would be keen on a Maori MP getting the top job, New Zealand media outlet
