This trio has mastered how to make sexy clothes in 2022.
—Hijiri Endo, Théodore Famery, and Agoston Palinko—it’s an ongoing investigation that takes the form of tees, sweats, and denim, all decorated with graphic illustrations that appear innocent at first glance, but reveal themselves on closer inspection to be delightfully illicit. “It’s never made sense to us that sex is still something considered taboo in fashion,” says Famery. “It’s everywhere, even if we don’t always say it out loud.
He’s right, although where most fashion designers might grapple with sexuality via a suggestive cut-out or a sheer panel or some curve-accentuating cling, Carne Bollente goes one step further. On a breezy short-sleeve bowling shirt, Palinko’s illustrations might feature orgiastic scenes inspired by Greek vases, a line of figures fondling each other’s genitalia, or show couples copulating as they float on clouds.
As Endo sees it, the fight for sexual liberation is far from over—and they hope their provocative designs reflect both the progress that has been made, but also their vision of a more inclusive future. “We try to communicate everything in a positive way, but it’s always about fighting for me,” he says. “To fight for women’s rights, gay rights, trans rights, racial equality—we don’t always put this on the front of our designs in a literal sense, but it’s there.
