McDonald's is just one of many companies that have been swept up in New Zealand's payroll problem -— more than 150 companies are currently being audited
The fast food giant will pay back all past and present employees in the past 10 years for miscalculated holiday wages, according to McDonald's spokesperson Simon Kenny. This agreement follows a years-long campaign by local labor union Unite Union, which Kenny said represents about 7% of McDonald's New Zealand employees. He estimated that about 40,000 employees were affected.
In 2016, the government estimated that up to 763,000 employees nationwide could be owed wages, and the total cost of remediation could reach 2.2 billion New Zealand dollars , Radio New Zealand reported. It's not just companies. Even government agencies like MBIE and the District Health Boards have made similar errors in calculating holiday pay. The health boards announced just last month that they owe health workers up to 650 million New Zealand dollars , Radio New Zealand reported.
