If its test goes well and the QSR giant broadens the availability of the McPlant, it would undoubtedly be game changing for the plant-based category, as McDonald’s scale and accessibility is simply unmatched.
And, a hypothetical rollout across the chain’s U.S. system would kick economies of scale into play and likely create more price parity between animal protein and analogue meat–one of the latter's major pain points. Currently, for example, a pound ofAnd, if customers can get their plant-based fix at any of McDonald's 14,000 U.S. locations, they'll likely start expecting to get it anywhere, which would incite even more introductions across the industry.
Of course, these are all big “ifs.” What we’re watching for now is simply that “operations” part of McDonald’s test. It will be a challenge to add a new item to the menu as many restaurants navigate historic labor shortages. But if the demand really exists for plant-based meat, expect McDonald’s to make it work.
