The new CX-60 is a lightweight, two-door, four-seat, spor... just kidding, it's another SUV
Nothing quite says a trend is here to stay like Mazda adopting it. Famously staunch advocates of the petrol engine, you might remember it resisted the switch to diesel for many, many years. And it still maintains the validity of its SkyActiv petrol engines in favour of downsized turbos. But Mazda has now seen fit to join pretty much everyone else as part of the plug-in hybrid ranks. If you can't beat them, you gotta join them.
The new CX-60 is a lightweight, two-door, four-seat, spor... just kidding, it's another SUV. Set to top the European Mazda range when it goes on sale, the CX-60 PHEV pairs a 2.5-litre four-cylinder with an electric motor for more than 300hp. Mazda says the new car will"offer smooth, efficient and powerful acceleration giving the driver greater confidence and driving enjoyment in the widest possible range of driving scenarios.
The CX-60 is the first of two new Mazdas from its Large Product Group range - aka a bunch of SUVs - coming in the next couple of years. The next after this will be the CX-80, with a third row of seats. Nothing says giving the buying public what they want like a seven-seat, plug-in hybrid SUV, after all.
The CX-60 will make its debut on March 8th, with sales presumably to follow soon after. Let's hope enough of what's made Mazda's petrol engine cars so appealing to enthusiasts makes it to the hybrid SUV. Stranger things have happened...
