To free up council time, the mayor’s office will handle proclamation requests instead of having all councillors vote on them, implementing a recommendation in the 2022 Governance Review Report.
In an effort to streamline council meetings, Victoria council will allow the mayor to approve all future proclamation requests made of the city.
Under the current system, proclamations to have the city recognize and declare things like World Refugee Day and International Medical Cannabis Day, which were declared this week, are considered by the whole council ahead of other council business during meetings. In suggesting the change, Mayor Marianne Alto noted approval of proclamations through the mayor’s office is a process used by many municipalities to respond efficiently to community requests for civic acknowledgement of notable events and observations.
“Consideration of proclamations by the mayor’s office was also a recommendation identified in the 2022 Governance Review Report,” she noted in a written motion. The change, which will see all proclamations submitted to the mayor for consideration and approval, is expected to free council agenda time for other priorities. A date for implementation of the new policy was not determined Thursday.
