Mater Dei to play in San Diego Section Division I title game today at UC San Diego
Needing a boost to get to a third consecutive softball championship game, Mater Dei Catholic turned to old reliable No. 13.Valdez tossed three scoreless innings to preserve the lead for an 8-4 victory Thursday over Mt. Carmel in the semifinals of the San Diego Section Division I playoffs at Poway Sportsplex.
Valdez, who wears No. 13 jersey reluctantly, allowed three walks and a pair of infield hits to restore order in a game had the Crusaders leading 6-4 after the fourth inning.“She didn’t allow any runs and that’s what was important,” Mater Dei coach Mike Centrullo said. Now 18-11 with its fifth straight win, top-seeded Mater Dei will play Cathedral Catholic on Friday at 7 p.m for the Division I crown. Cathedral held off Mt. Carmel 15-12 late Thursday night.
