A shortened spring meant conditioning work, and the build-up for a long year, would have to leak into the regular season.
Still, with that pitch cap, Pérez still had an opportunity to eat meaningful innings on Saturday. With the A’s, Woodward saw a lineup that wanted to swing aggressively. Pérez was tasked with keeping his pitches on the corners and ensuring his changeup stayed low. He finished with five strikeouts, and very four of the 15 balls hit in play had an exit velocity over 96 miles per hour.“I just love the way he carries himself, the way he executes,” Woodward said of his 31-year-old starter.
