There are seven main groups of people who may be eligible for a Council Tax discount and possible refund
Martin Lewis is urging households up and down the country to check if they are eligible for a Council Tax discount before the new financial year begins on April 6. While Council Tax band evaluations differ in Scotland, England and Wales, the various ways to qualify for a discount are mostly the same.
He explained: “The other way to cut on Council Tax is there are discounts, the big one is the single person discount if you live alone or if you live with children or full time students. Students can get a discount, those on low income may be eligible for a discount, those with disabilities, those with a severe mental impairment such as dementia, as can carers.”
Council Tax bands range from A to H. A is the lowest band with the lowest charges and H has the highest charges. If you live alone The full Council Tax is calculated assuming there are two or more people living in each home – if you live alone, you should apply to your local council for a discount - you could get a 25 per cent reduction, regardless of your financial circumstances.
You may also get the band lowered if a room in the house is dedicated to equipment used by a disabled person on a daily basis.
