Orange Shirt Day is a day to honour residential school survivors. Annually on Sept. 30, people across the country wear an orange shirt. Many take time to educate others about the dark history of the residential schools. Between the late 1800s and the late 1990s, more than 150,000 First Nations, Inuit and Metis children were forced to attend the residential schools, where they were underfed, mistreated and isolated from their families.Thirty yearsThe Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established in 2007 and released its final report in 2015.
