Mark Meadows is retiring from Congress to “work more closely” with Trump
the president. “Every year it’s a decision whether you’re going to run again. Probably the hardest thing for me was the timing of this, because the president has accomplished so much.” He added, pointedly, “I’m not only an ally, but will continue to be an ally.”
Meadows, who chairs the right-wing House Freedom Caucus, has been one of Trump’s most outspoken supporters, including in the fight against impeachment. He didn’t say what his official job for Trump would be, though Politico suggested that an administration post or a role in the president’s 2020 campaign could be in Meadows’ future. “While there’s no immediate plans,” he told the outlet, “there’s certainly discussions that have occurred and potentially could occur in the future.
