Mardi Gras parade estimates vary widely as 2022 Carnival begins.
And the initial returns seemed to verify the large boasts: Last week’s Conde Cavalier parade drew 157,000 revelers, according to Mobile police. At such a count, the crowd size exceeded Fat Tuesday attendance of previous years during picture-perfect days.
“Usually, we have the same staff in charge of determining crowd counts,” said Solis. “However, this year it was a new staff assigned who made the miscalculation.” Lawrence Battiste, executive director of public safety with the city of Mobile, said that estimating crowd counts for Mardi Gras parades consists of a “complicated formula” that utilizes a best guess estimate that takes into the consideration the depth of people watching the parade in some areas of downtown Mobile.
He added, “It’s a crazy way to figure it out. We don’t have a clicker or have people counting specifically to who is in the area. It’s not an exact science.” “The mystic organizations like to know how many people attend their night parades and it gives us an idea of how many people have visited the downtown area.”and was once thrust into the national debate over the issue
