Murray is likely to return from his latest injury Saturday in Vancouver, the third Leafs netminder to start in Western Canada this week.
“I’m very confident in our goaltenders,” Dubas told reporters in Vancouver, adding the team has had a chance to see how Samsonov, the team’s No. 1, responds when things aren’t going well and how he recovers from bad stretches.
It’s been a good season for Samsonov, one of two netminding reclamation projects Dubas acquired over the summer. His 22-8-2 record is impressive, as is his .915 save percentage. The Leafs will likely be facing an all-world goalie in Andrei Vasilevskiy in what looks like an inevitable first-round rematch with the Tampa Bay Lightning.. Ryan O’Reilly and Noel Acciari make the forward group harder to play against, while Jake McCabe and Luke Schenn will do the same for the defence.
A few goalies were moved before the trade deadline, notably Columbus sending Joonas Korpisalo to Los Angeles for Jonathan Quick. But Dubas has never wavered in his faith in Murray and Samsonov and never seemed to be in on any goalie rumour.“We believe in the potential of Ilya and Joe. We’ll get Matt healthy and get him rolling and let the three of them continue moving in the right direction.”For one thing, if Murray returns Saturday, they likely will send Woll to the Marlies.
There’s one more forward they can look to as well, six-foot-six Radim Zohorna. The only move Dubas made Friday was to send Dryden Hunt to Calgary for Zohorna, who signed as a free agent with the Penguins out of Czechia in 2020.The roster is imbalanced, with 12 forwards and nine defencemen. One of those defencemen is Connor Timmins, whom Dubas made clear is a work in progress and will be lightly used.
