The Leafs have used 15 different defencemen this season and 67 different even-strength pairings. Now they have nine capable blue liners on the roster.
That they were both drafted quite high just four years apart — Schenn fifth overall in 2008, Rielly fourth overall in 2012 — brings back memories of the difficult times the team had even making the playoffs in that era.
Both symbolize two different parts of the game — Schenn the brutal force, Rielly the grace and skill. Both were expected to carry the franchise to greatness. Schenn never got the chance, traded after his fourth season, ironically one day after the Leafs drafted Rielly. Rielly was added to a struggling team that Schenn had been traded from, but emerged as a leader and — eventually surrounded by a better cast — the team has seen much better days, though of course, not in the playoffs. And though Schenn has missed the last two games to return to Vancouver to settle his affairs there and be with his pregnant wife, it would appear that coach Sheldon Keefe likes what he sees when he pairs Rielly with Schenn.
They’ve only played two games together — so, yes, small sample size. But in the four games the Maple Leafs have played since the influx of new defencemen , Rielly has paired better with Schenn than any of his other partners at five-on-five, according to naturalstattrick.com. Their possession numbers are at about 50 per cent, but expected goals — a measurement of the quality of shots generated when they’re on the ice — stand at a very good 58.14 per cent, best among any of the team’s defensive pairs that have played at least 10 minutes together at even strength since the trade deadline.
