From koshtorontosun: Maple Leafs not in sync as Panthers win Game 1 of second round
The Leafs didn’t overly threaten Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky in the third period, though the goalie was more tuned in than what the Leafs saw in Tampa’s Andrei Vasilevskiy in the first round. On Thursday, the Leafs are going to have get in Bobrovsky’s face with a little more regularity.The Leafs hadn’t played a game in the second round of the playoffs in nearly 19 years.
“We want to push this forward,” Leafs captain John Tavares said in the morning. “It’s one step of four we’re trying to make in the playoffs and it was a long time coming for us. It’s great because we get the challenge of the second step here now.”Article content The Leafs responded, however, with their own physicality. By the time the game ended, there might have been more open-ice hits coming from both sides than there was in the entire first-round series against Tampa.
Rookie Matthew Knies, who has been around the opposition’s net in every game he has played with the Leafs, scored his first goal for Toronto at 8:09. And quite a nifty goal it was.
