Simon Benoit, signed in August, skated on his own on Friday at the Ford Performance Centre as he works his way through back spasm issues. Twice in his first four NHL seasons, Klingberg was in the Norris Trophy conversation with the Dallas Stars, finishing sixth in voting in 2015-16 and again two years later. No one expects the 31-year-old to get back to that level again, but there has to be better defensive responsibility on the part of the veteran.

“He has been an elite defenceman, offensively especially, for a long time,” McCabe said. “His puck skills are very elite. Skating is elite, somebody who’s really easy to play with. Many on the outside aren’t convinced that the Leafs have a defence corps that is worthy of a legitimate Cup contender. Those thoughts have not filtered into the dressing room.
