Toronto will look to break a crushing string of post-season losses in a likely first-round matchup with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Leafs were idle Monday night but clinched a playoff berth for the seventh consecutive season when the Ottawa Senators beat the Florida Panthers 5-2.
Now, it’s a sure thing. The only thing up for grabs over the Leafs’ final eight games is whether they can secure home-ice advantage for a likely first-round series with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas — who is on the last year of his contract — fortified the team by adding six players at this season’s trade deadline. That list includes Ryan O’Reilly, who is eligible to play Wednesday against Florida if his broken finger is healed, and fan favourite Luke Schenn, the hard-hitting defenceman drafted by a previous Leafs regime in 2008.
