Maple Leafs add Boucher, Van Ryn to complete Keefe\u0027s coaching staff
We’ve hired Guy Boucher and Mike Van Ryn as assistant coachesCarbery’s departure to coach the Washington Capitals opened the door for Boucher’s return to the bench. He had been working in media the past few years after stints with Tampa Bay and Ottawa and had discussed previous openings on the Leaf staff with Keefe.
Keefe said he was not only impressed by Boucher’s “passion” for the power play and Toronto’s strengths in that area and what his own tweaks might bring, but that Boucher kept up with changes in the league the past few seasons despite being away from the day-to-day strategizing. Boucher, 51, was head coach of the Lightning from 2010-13 and the Senators 2016-19. His combined record was 191-186-46, with the Bolts reaching the Eastern Conference Final in 2011, likewise the Senators in 2017. He spent many years in the QMHJL, the AHL and coached Team Canada as an assistant for the world junior champions in 2009 and later at the Spengler Cup.
The London, Ont., native also put in two seasons with the Arizona Coyotes organization, one as head coach of the AHL Tucson Roadrunners. For three seasons prior, he was with the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers, including one as head coach, as well as assistant with the AHL’s Houston Aeros for two seasons, following a year as assistant with the OHL’ s Niagara IceDogs.
Keefe said Van Ryn will work the Toronto defence in a collaborative effort with incumbent Dean Chynoweth handling the penalty kill. Manny Malhotra will continue various duties, including faceoffs, but move upstairs on game night as an “eye in the sky”, which Keefe hasn’t had since the experiment with Paul MacLean a couple of years ago.
