CLEVELAND, Ohio — Neither manager was around for the end of Monday’s game between the Guardians and Angels as home plate umpire Ron Kulpa ejected both Cleveland’s Terry Francona and Phil Nevin of Los Angeles.
With Andrés Giménez batting and two out in the seventh, Angels righty Ryan Tepera threw a pitch that appeared to hit Giménez on the left foot. Giménez, who has been hit by a pitch an American League-leading 19 times, immediately pointed to his foot, but Kulpa did not rule that the pitch struck him, and Cleveland did not appeal for a review in the allotted time.
That’s when Francona began chirping at Kulpa, prompting the umpiring crew to get together and discuss the situation. After it was determined that Cleveland could not challenge, an incensed Francona went after Kulpa and had to be restrained by bench coach DeMarlo Hale and first base umpire John Tumpane.
Cameras captured Francona unleashing a tirade of profanity directed at Kulpa, who ejected the Guardians skipper as Hale tried to intervene. It was Francona’s third ejection of the season and 14th in 10 seasons with Cleveland. Francona has been ejected 47 times in 22 years as a big league manager with Cleveland, Boston and Philadelphia.
