Yasin Jemal Rashid was convicted of second-degree murder of a 29-year-old housemate and will have to serve at least 12 years in a federal prison before being eligible for parole
The judge noted Rashid had stopped taking antipsychotic medications and his mental health had been deteriorating for weeks and “he was at least intermittently psychotic during that time. But a complete lack of evidence … made it impossible to determine what role that mental disorder played at the precise time he attacked Mr. Gabriel, with whom he appeared to be having a friendly or at least unhostile interaction very shortly beforehand.
In a victim impact statement, his sister said Gabriel had wanted to go to school and reconcile with his family and “the saddest thing of all is that Mr. Gabriel’s death stole away hope.” He will be sentenced to federal prison and it’s unclear what type of treatment will be available or “how effective it will be, or how its benefits may be counteracted by other less‑helpful influences and experiences in the prison environment,” said Smith.
Then Gabriel came down the stairs, shouting, ‘Oh my God,’ and holding on to the side of his bleeding neck before he collapsed on the kitchen floor.
