The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team released this photo of a metal spike allegedly wielded by a man who was shot by Calgary police on Feb. 14, 2023.ASIRT said the man then emerged from a stall and charged at an officer while raising the metal spike. Officers used their stun guns but failed to stop the man. After one officer was struck by the metal spike, another officer fired their gun, striking the man.

An officer who was a former medic attempted first aid on the assailant, who was declared dead at the scene by EMS.Family members of the shooting victim have identified him as Mitch Croston, 34. His mother, Shelley Croston,ASIRT says its continuing investigation will determine if the force used in this case was appropriate, as the agency does with all incidents of police use of force in Alberta that result in serious injury or death.
