'Is a photo illegal?' the man asked New Jersey judge with an attached picture of a shotgun, federal authorities said.

Authorities say a man in California sent threatening emails, including a photo of a gun, to New Jersey judges and other public officials.Jonathan Lipman had already sent hundreds of erratic and threatening emails to public officials by the time the photo arrived in the New Jersey judge’s inbox, authorities say.Attached was an image of a shotgun. The email contained no text, just a winking emoji, court records show.

Lipman could not be reached for comment. In a YouTube video he posted after the FBI raided his home, he claimed the search was “just a further attempt to intimidate me.” In frequent and lengthy diatribes on both sites, Lipman blamed officials in Lacey Township for alleged incidents of bullying and antisemitism he experienced while attending public school there, Rozzi told NJ Advance Media in an interview.

According to the complaint, Lipman also posted “threatening content” on a different Facebook page, one run by the Lacey Township Police Department, in May of 2022. That prompted local police to file “a temporary extreme risk protective order” to prevent him from possessing a gun. New Jersey’s Judicial Security Unit alerted authorities in California, according a spokesman for the state Judiciary.
